How Humana Supports Veterans, Military Retirees, and Their Families
Humana is dedicated to supporting the health and wellbeing of veterans, military retirees, service members, and their families – supporting more than 5 million individuals across Medicare Advantage and TRICARE. Our work spans Medicare Advantage, TRICARE administration through Humana Military, the Humana Foundation’s mission-driven investments to advance health outcomes for veterans, and partnerships with Military Service Organizations (MSOs), Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) and community groups. Our mission centers around expanding access, improving coverage options, and supporting whole-person health—so veterans can receive the high-quality care they have earned, wherever and whenever they need it.
Expanding Access and Supporting Choice
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) generally prioritizes specialized treatment for service-connected injuries and illnesses commonly connected to military service. For services not offered at the VA or because of geographical or scheduling constraints, veterans sometimes seek care outside of VA facilities. The VA
How Humana Supports Veterans Through Medicare Advantage
Through Medicare Advantage, Humana offers plans designed to work alongside VA care and help veterans address gaps in access and coverage when care is needed outside VA facilities.
Humana’s Medicare Advantage plans—including Humana USAA Honor Giveback plans—are designed to complement VA benefits and support veterans’ choice and continuity of care. These plans offer:
- Broad provider networks for timely and local care
- Benefits typically not available through VA, like dental, vision, and hearing coverage
- Affordable options, including $0 premiums and reduced Medicare Part B premiums through Part B premium givebacks, helping veterans save $30–$150 per month
- $0 copay for in-network primary care visits
- $0 copay for in-network mental health services, including therapy and specialist visits, both virtually and in-person
- Pharmacy benefits that may be lower cost and more convenient than VA Health’s mail order pharmacy
- Support resources to help veterans coordinate Medicare Advantage with VA coverage, along with access to Humana Customer Care specialists, who collaborated with USAA to receive special training to better serve veterans (available to anyone with Medicare).
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reviews and approves all Medicare Advantage plan offerings, including those with significant veteran enrollment, ensuring plans reflect expected costs.
Humana Military and TRICARE
For more than 30 years, Humana Military has served as the TRICARE East Region administrator. TRICARE is the uniformed services’ health care program for active-duty service members, military retirees, and their families. Humana Military supports millions of these beneficiaries in the East Region, including survivors of service members who have passed.
Our goal is to simplify the healthcare experience for beneficiaries, strengthen provider networks, and partner with the Department of Defense and Defense Health Agency. Humana Military provides educational resources, digital tools, and support services to help families understand their coverage, access care, and navigate referrals. Continued investment in TRICARE is essential to maintaining the health and readiness of military families.
Community Partnerships and Whole-Person Support
Humana partners with VSOs, MSOs and community-based groups to reduce barriers to care and support the social and mental well-being of veterans and their families. In addition, and guided by its mission to advance health outcomes, the Humana Foundation places a strong emphasis on serving veterans by investing in programs that address the unique social determinants impacting their health, ensuring they have the support, stability, and access needed to thrive long after their service. For Humana and its philanthropic arm, key initiatives include:
- Work closely with VFW, DAV (Disabled American Veterans), AMVETS and other VSOs to expand outreach to help increase awareness of the benefits and resources available to them, and to connect veterans and families to health care, behavioral health, and community partners.
- Participate as a
