Dr. Karen Millender supports our Emancipation Avenue location in Houston. She is board certified in Family Medicine and has been working as a physician for 15 years. She graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine and completed her residency in Family Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Post-residency, Dr. Millender began working at Mobile County Health Department in Mobile, Alabama, spent six years in the internal medicine department of the Franklin Primary Health Center, and was Assistant Medical Director of Wiregrass Hospice, also in Mobile. After moving to Texas, she treated homebound patients for the Visiting Physicians Association, among other locum tenens assignments. Prior to joining our clinic, she practiced outpatient family medicine at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Group in Lake Jackson for five years. While there, Dr. Millender received three “Right Care” awards, based on peer recommendations. As far as her experience with seniors, as an Assistant Medical Director of Wiregrass Hospice, Dr. Millender was responsible for terminally ill patients who were well into their 90s. She admits that she has always been drawn to caring for patients, especially those with multiple complex chronic conditions. She ascribes to the “golden rule” philosophy of care: “Treat patients as you would expect and want to be treated,” and she believes in educating patients about managing their conditions in layman’s terms — for example, teaching patients why they need to take their medication and what it does for them. She strives to ensure patient satisfaction by listening to her patients and making sure she has addressed their concerns. Coming from a family of nurses, Dr. Millender was also called to nursing, but says her love of biology and academics made her want to become an M.D. She says the best part about her profession is interacting with her patients and helping to improve their overall quality of life. The words she lives by are, ”Don’t ever take anything personal,” she says. Some of Dr. Millender’s hobbies include decorating, music, dancing, and reading.
